About the show

Built for the people who build everything else.

The Handyman Special was created to give the people behind the trades a place to tell the stories that usually don't get told.

The wins. The mistakes. The impossible jobs.

The customers you'll never forget.

The tricks learned after thousands of hours on the job.

And the lessons that only come from actually doing the work.

This isn't about competing with the contractor down the road. It's about learning from each other.

No competition. No gatekeeping. Just the trades.

The people asking the questions

Meet the Hosts

Brent Bishop, host of The Handyman Special

Host

Brent Bishop

Brent’s connection to the trades started long before plumbing. Raised by a single mother who worked in drafting and design and wasn’t afraid to take on construction projects herself, Brent grew up around the idea that knowing how to build, fix, and create was simply part of life. That foundation grew even stronger through his stepfather, a hardworking heavy-duty diesel mechanic with a background in Chevrolet-sponsored drag racing in the 1970s. He taught Brent how to work on equipment and gave him advice that would stick with him for life: "learn as much about the trades as you can while you’re young. Once you have the knowledge, it’s something no one can take away from you." Brent took that advice seriously. From roughly 12 to 16 years old, he gained hands-on experience in full-home remodeling before deciding at 16 to pursue new-construction plumbing. After several years, he intentionally moved into repair and service plumbing so he could understand the trade from both sides. From installing entire plumbing systems to diagnosing and repairing them. Along the way, Brent attended college for carpentry, he became a lead journeyman plumber within other companies, before eventually becoming a Master plumber of his own company. Today, Brent brings a lifetime of hands-on experience, and respect for skilled trades to The Handyman Special. His story represents exactly what the show is about: people who learned by doing, built their knowledge one skill at a time, and turned those skills into something bigger. The trades didn’t just give Brent a career, they helped shape the way he approaches work, business, and life.

Jose Fonseca, host of The Handyman Special

Host

Jose Fonseca

Jose Fonseca grew up in the trades and learned the business from the ground up, long before he was old enough to run one. He started working in his family’s company around the age of 14, gaining hands-on experience and learning what it really takes to serve customers, solve problems, and get the job done. At just 18 years old, Jose Fonseca stepped into the responsibility of taking over the family business. Since then, he has continued to grow and operate the company while remaining connected to the work that built it. His perspective comes from years of being in the work. Learning the trade, running a business, leading through challenges, and figuring things out along the way. As co-host of The Handyman Special, Jose Fonseca brings that experience to the table to help create a place where tradesmen can have real conversations, share what they’ve learned, and give a voice to the people who build, fix, and keep everything running. The Voice of the Trades.

Don't miss the next one.

New conversations, Tricks of the Trade, contractor stories, and things you probably won't learn from a manual.
